 Free computer science courses, new teaching technology reinvent online education! Stanford Engineering professors are setting out to add a new level of interactivity to online education by offering three of the university's most popular computer science classes for free. This is a wonderful opportunity for 11th and 12th grade home school high school students to obtain a university experience before attending college. In addition, when the student completes the course they receive a certificate of completion, which looks grate on a college application and curriculum vitae. Mind maps have many applications in personal, family, educational, and business situations, including notetaking, brainstorming (wherein ideas are inserted into the map radially around the center node, without the implicit prioritization that comes from hierarchy or sequential arrangements, and wherein grouping and organizing is reserved for later stages), summarizing, as a mnemonic technique, or to sort out a complicated idea. Mind maps are also promoted as a way to collaborate in color pen creativity sessions. This article reflects on the rhetoric of ‘Web 2.0’ and its potential versus actual impact. The author suggests that we need to do more than look at how social networking technologies are being used generally as an indicator of their potential impact on education, arguing instead that we need to rethink what are the fundamental characteristics of learning and then see how social networking can be harnessed to maximise these characteristics to best effect.
