This article reflects on the rhetoric of ‘Web 2.0’ and its potential versus actual impact. The author suggests that we need to do more than look at how social networking technologies are being used generally as an indicator of their potential impact on education, arguing instead that we need to rethink what are the fundamental characteristics of learning and then see how social networking can be harnessed to maximise these characteristics to best effect.

Stanford University offered three of their most popular computer science courses to the public fall, 2011 online for free. The courses were so popular that Stanford’s doing it again in January 2012. These courses are wonderful in helping prepare the student for the rigors of college. In addition the student is awarded a certificate of completion.
